Book: Hemp and cannabis
Discoveries, selections, diversity, culture, cuisine, traditions, legends, literature. and of course medicine, legislation and other illegal and smoky uses: here's a complete tour of the shared history between man, hemp. and cannabis!
The difference between the two expressions of the same plant lies in the concentration of the active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Fibre hemp contains between 0 and 0.2 %, while the concentration in cannabis varies from 10 to 30 % for the most potent varieties.)
Hence the rich and varied uses. From the outset, hemp has been used for a wide variety of purposes, in all civilisations and at all times. Hemp has been used as a textile, medicinal, food, cosmetic and manufacturing plant (in particular for paper and boat ropes), as well as a magical plant and for religious rituals.
The decline began in the early nineteenth century, with the virtual disappearance of hemp in the navy, then in clothing and pulp manufacture. Then came the demonisation of canna bis in the early twentieth century in the United States, and hemp's reputation finally went up in smoke.
