However, its use gradually declined in the twentieth century, mainly because of the rise of cotton and synthetic fibres, but also because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cannavie.be\/en\/marijuana-tax-act-prohibition-cannabis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cannabis prohibition policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the textile industry is rediscovering the many advantages of hemp:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>An ecological culture<\/strong> Low water requirements, no need for pesticides and soil enrichment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>From <a href=\"https:\/\/cannavie.be\/en\/hemp-insulation-sustainable-solution-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resistant and thermoregulating fibres<\/a><\/strong> They provide comfort and durability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Potential for relocating the textile industry<\/strong> in Europe and <strong>Belgium<\/strong>Many players are working hard to revive this production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to these qualities, interest in textile hemp is growing, with research projects and cultivation trials being carried out across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Des_avancees_majeures_pour_la_filiere_textile\"><\/span><strong>Major advances for the textile industry<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le <strong>textile hemp<\/strong> can be used in various forms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Short fibres<\/strong> integrated into composites or mixed with other textiles (cotton, linen).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Long fibres<\/strong> They are of better quality and can be used to manufacture 100 % hemp fabrics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent research in <strong>Wallonia<\/strong> are particularly interested in <strong>long fibres<\/strong>which offer a credible alternative to cotton and flax fibres. Its objective is to develop an industrial sector of <strong>long hemp fibres<\/strong>from cultivation to recycling, as part of an integrated approach.<strong>circular economy<\/strong> and <strong>local textile reindustrialisation<\/strong> in North-West Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project <strong>Hemp4Circularity<\/strong> in particular <strong>coordinated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valbiom.be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Valbiom<\/a><\/strong> (Belgian actor) and brings together <strong>11 industrial partners<\/strong>. The tests carried out in <strong>Wallonia<\/strong> is showing promising results, with varieties adapted to local conditions and increasingly efficient processing. The mechanisation of harvesting and defibration is at the heart of research to optimise yield and fibre quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Objectifs_et_actions_du_projet\"><\/span><strong>Project objectives and actions<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To structure this sector, experiments are being carried out at every stage of production: crop trials, the development of new products and the development of new technologies. <strong>mechanisation<\/strong> harvest, the <strong>transformation<\/strong> in fibre, yarn, fabric and knitwear, as well as the development of solutions for <strong>recycling<\/strong>. At the same time, a <strong>awareness<\/strong> The project is accompanied by a training programme, with workshops and conferences aimed at players in the sector. Supported by <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.valbiom.be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Valbiom<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>This project aims to optimise hemp cultivation in Wallonia by adopting techniques inspired by flax (dense sowing, parallel stalks, extended retting).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main objective is to <strong>extract molecules of interest<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/cannavie.be\/en\/entourage-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cannabinoids, terpenes, polyphenols<\/a>) present in the tops of hemp plants, while maintaining a production of <strong>high quality long fibres<\/strong>. Several trials were carried out to :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Determine <strong>the ideal cutting period<\/strong>depending on the maturity of the fibres and the presence of secondary fibres.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Study <strong>drying and extraction methods<\/strong> best suited to Wallonia's infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess <strong>technical and economic feasibility<\/strong> of this covalorisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results show strong potential and promising initial indications for applications in <strong>biocontrol<\/strong>. However, further analysis is needed to confirm these trends and optimise the valuation processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With ExtraHempWal, Wallonia <strong>lays the foundations for an innovative industry<\/strong> which combines textile production with the extraction of plant molecules.
