The country faced a shortage of <strong>fibres<\/strong> essential to the production of ropes, parachute straps and other military equipment. The production of <strong>hemp<\/strong> in the Philippines and the East Indies was under Japanese control and jute imports from India were very limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To remedy this situation, the American government encouraged the <strong>culture<\/strong> domestic <strong>hemp<\/strong> in states such as Kentucky and Wisconsin. The film states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"In 1942, at the request of the government, patriotic farmers planted 37,000 acres of hemp. The aim for 1943 is to exceed 50,000 acres.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Un_retour_temporaire_du_chanvre\"><\/span>A temporary return to hemp<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this 15-minute short film, we learn just how much the <strong>hemp<\/strong> has been central to the history <strong>maritime<\/strong> and industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/cannavie.be\/en\/hemp-textile-ecological-revolution-fashion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sails, ropes and <strong>textiles<\/strong> have depended on hemp for centuries.<\/a> In the midst of mobilisation, growing hemp became a patriotic act, temporarily decriminalised to support the war effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Une_disparition_et_une_reapparition_inattendues\"><\/span>An unexpected disappearance and reappearance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite its historical importance, <strong><em>Hemp for Victory<\/em> <\/strong>was long forgotten. After the war, hemp became <strong>illegal<\/strong>and the US government even denied the film's existence. It wasn't until 1989 that two VHS copies were rediscovered and donated to the Library of Congress by activists. <strong>Jack Herer<\/strong>Mia Farrow and Carl Packard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bIxFhYVv_Gk\"><em>Hemp for Victory<\/em> is available free of charge on the Internet<\/a>offers a unique insight into the importance of hemp during the <strong>Second World War<\/strong> and its under-exploited potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pourquoi_cest_important_aujourdhui\"><\/span>Why it's important today<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This historical review highlights the versatility and the <strong>benefits of hemp<\/strong>.
