This neurological disorder causes uncontrollable seizures that are resistant to conventional treatments. At her worst, Sophie suffered up to <strong>50 seizures a day<\/strong>which put his life in danger.  In 2015, after years of failed treatments, his parents turned to a controversial but promising option: the use of cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are active compounds derived from cannabis.<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to them, Sofie Voncken owes her life to the <strong>medical marijuana<\/strong>. Since 2015, when she first took cannabinoids, Sophie shouldn't have gone to A&amp;E once! Together with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wasmh.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asbl We Are Sofie<\/a>They have taken the Belgian government to court. The Voncken family has requested the legalisation of the<strong>cannabis oil<\/strong> medicinal products before the courts. The application was lodged with the Brussels court. Their experience has opened up the debate on the effectiveness of medical cannabis in the management of epilepsy, but their battle continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-76c2ab972f8cb7985510aaa8443c5b3a\" style=\"color:#457b4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Quest-ce_que_lepilepsie_et_pourquoi_est-elle_difficile_a_traiter\"><\/span><strong>What is epilepsy and why is it difficult to treat?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L'<strong>epilepsy<\/strong> is a chronic neurological disease that causes seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Epilepsy can vary in severity and type of seizure. Severe forms, such as <strong>Dravet syndrome<\/strong> and <strong>Lennox-Gastaut syndrome<\/strong>These often require heavy and complex treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These two rare forms of epilepsy account for around 20 % of cases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Le <strong>Lennox-Gastaut syndrome<\/strong> is a disease that generally begins in early childhood. It manifests as tonic seizures marked by uncontrolled muscle contractions. The condition is often associated with learning difficulties and impaired intellectual and motor skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Le <strong>Dravet syndrome<\/strong> is a rare genetic disorder that appears in young children. Symptoms include convulsions often triggered by fever, hyperactivity, and delays in language and motor development. This disease has a high mortality rate. In some cases, death can occur before the age of 10.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 30 % of patients with epilepsy do not respond to <strong>treatments<\/strong> This is leading families and healthcare professionals to explore other solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ede95e09948dcc892723db2064a1c8c9\" style=\"color:#457b4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Le_role_des_cannabinoides_dans_le_traitement_de_lepilepsie\"><\/span><strong>The role of cannabinoids in the treatment of epilepsy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b24134c65bdcefb57b8481df34b80e49\" style=\"color:#457b4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Quest-ce_quun_cannabinoide\"><\/span><strong>What is a cannabinoid?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>cannabinoids<\/strong> are chemical compounds found in hemp, the best known of which are CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). In addition to <strong>CBD<\/strong> and THC, the cannabis plant contains over a hundred other cannabinoids, such as CBG (cannabigerol) and CBN (cannabinol), which are beginning to be the subject of in-depth research into their potential health effects. <a href=\"https:\/\/cannavie.be\/en\/entourage-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">These compounds act in synergy, a phenomenon known as the entourage effect. Their effects are reinforced when they come into contact with each other. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0d75af836bcb7d4139bb941e864c49c8\" style=\"color:#457b4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Comment_le_CBD_agit_sur_lorganisme\"><\/span><strong>How does CBD affect the body?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors involved in regulating essential functions such as pain, mood, appetite and sleep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.revmed.ch\/view\/776280\/6146333\/ML_40-25_194.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies show that CBD can reduce the frequency and intensity of epileptic seizures<\/a>particularly in patients resistant to conventional treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8987325455518ecdd0cef8898d1d0077\" style=\"color:#457b4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Quels_sont_les_medicaments_a_base_de_cannabis_autorises\"><\/span>What cannabis-based medicines are authorised?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Epidiolex\u00ae<\/strong> is the first cannabis-based medicine to be legalised in the United States. It is approved in Europe for certain types of epilepsy, but is not available in Belgium. Visit <strong>Belgium<\/strong>The medical use of cannabis is governed by strict laws. All products containing THC (more than 0.3%) come under narcotics legislation and are illegal. Visit <strong>Sativex<\/strong>\u00ae, a treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS), is an exception. However, calls for more flexible regulation are multiplying, fuelled by cases like Sophie's.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Non-medical CBD, which is available over the counter at various points of sale, differs from&nbsp;<strong>cannabis-based medical treatments<\/strong>. These are prescribed on prescription to patients who are being monitored in specific clinical situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7b52b4ff2e778309997fc0464f8adc31\" style=\"color:#457b4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Efficacite_du_CBD_medicament_au_CBD_dans_le_traitement_des_crises\"><\/span>Effectiveness of CBD (CBD medication) in treating seizures<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le <strong>CBD<\/strong> (here Epidiolex\u00ae, the pharmaceutical CBD oil), a non-psychotropic component of cannabis, has been shown to be effective in certain types of refractory epilepsy, including :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>reduction of at least 50 %<\/strong> seizures in 43 % of patients with <strong>Dravet syndrome<\/strong> treated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>reduction of 42 %<\/strong> atonic seizures in patients with <strong>Lennox-Gastaut syndrome<\/strong> compared with 17 % with placebo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Various refractory epilepsies<\/strong> A mean reduction in seizures of 50 % in 52 % of patients in an uncontrolled study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9b8ee0a8eb54f7936c897fb46ffab697\" style=\"color:#457b4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story of <strong>Sophie Voncken<\/strong> illustrates both the limitations of conventional treatments for epilepsy and the potential of cannabinoids. Medical cannabis offers a glimmer of hope to patients and their families for whom conventional treatments have failed.
